The Green Dog Guide to Success / El Éxito Segun el Perro Verde

dog-green 2

Ah, success! That ever elusive KUDO that evades you, vanishes the minute you get a glimpse of it and makes you strive even harder to get it.
Now, what is it, exactly, to be successful? Why do we all go after it like a cat after a mouse, or like a mouse after a succulent piece of Roquefort? And why do we all share the same vision of what success is? After all, as I just said, to a cat, it’s pouncing on a nice, juicy mouse to eat; and for the mouse, on the contrary, it has the distinctive scent of cheese ( and outsmarting the cat!).
The first image that pops into our brain when we talk about success is money/ mansion/ flashy car/luxurious vacations/ chocolate fountains in the parks… umm…oops, sorry, Green Dog Daydream…
Anyway, let’s get serious. First, a definition.
It is commonly accepted that success means having a lot of material goods, such as cars, houses, furniture, vacations, etc., the more and more expensive, the better. If this is accepted as true, how do we explain the huge amount of people who theoretically ‘have it all’ and yet are not happy and thriving?
So now that we got the success ball rolling, let’s redefine what success is, by Green Dog standards.
1. If it makes you smile, it’s a success. That applies equally to jobs, people, hobbies, books and beers.
2. If other people (who are not your own, wonderful self) freak out about something you do which does not affect them,…lettem take a seat and watch! Your life, your rules. End of story.
3. Following the lead in number 2, in case you get nervous, remember that the Number One World Expert on Your Life is YOU… no brainer, really, but we all get caught up in silly beliefs sometimes, like that others may know better… Nope, no chance! YOU know where you’ve been, you know where you are and you know where you’re going. Can they ‘know’ better than the person who’s actually living your life, that is: YOU? This said, ask for help or counsel when you need it.
4. If you feel good with yourself, great! If not, change the ‘Why Me?’ mantra for the ‘Why NOTMe?’ mantra. Treat yourself well. Nobody will if they see you don’t. Look at yourself in the mirror and ‘see’ you, all you’ve been through, all the strength you have, and value it. And forgive yourself like you would forgive your closest, dearest friend. Because that is exactly who you are.
5. Don’t let the haters bring you down. This is a tough one, but essential. People are so bored with their lives that they need to focus on someone who has a better life than them. That’s why they gossip: one part boredom, one part ignorance, two trucks full of cowardice. If they took a look at their life and tried to fix whatever was wrong and improve the positive aspects, they would have little time for worrying about the amount of chocolate you eat or where your boyfriend is from, or if you should cut, dye or straighten that horrible mane of yours.
6. What it all boils down to is being unashamedly you, no apologies or regrets. Don’t let the doubters fill you with their qualms. Don’t allow them to shrink your dreams so they can deal with it. You may end up living THEIR lives…Eww…used lives, like dirty socks, sort of stink.
Now, are you people still with me? Oh, thank you… I love it when I get an audience.
To wrap things up, if it feels like success to you, and it tastes like success to you, and it smells and sounds like success to you, then it probably IS success.
What is success for this wyrd Green Dog?
My sons’ laughter. The smell of freshly baked bread. Being able to write a little every day. Moving forward with my life. Learning. Stumbling. Getting back on my feet.
Because there is nothing the world loves better than trying to knock you down and having to stand back in awe of your stubborn resistance and the way you refuse to be pushed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered.
Your life is your own, so own it!

TU sabes dónde has estado.
Trátate bien a tí misma.
A ver, gente, ¿seguís ahí? Oh, gracias…me encanta tener audiencia.
Aprender. Tropezar. Volverme a levantar.
